The following keyboard shortcuts will get you to your favorite sites quickly:

Internet Explorer 8:

Press Alt + A to open the Favorites menu, then press the first letter of the folder or site.  The first item with that letter will be highlighted.  If you have more than one favorite with the same letter, press the letter again to get to the next one.  The right arrow will display a pop out with sites within a folder.  Press Enter to go to your favorite.

Firefox:

Press Alt + B to open the Bookmarks menu, then press the first letter of your bookmark.  The first item with that letter will be highlighted.  If you have more than one bookmark with the same letter, press the letter again to get to the next one.  The right arrow will display a pop out with sites within a folder.  Press Enter to go to your bookmark.
